Cannibalism facilitates gigantism in a nine-spined stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) population

2016

Cannibalism is a taxonomically widespread phenomenon that can fundamentally affect the structure and stability of aquatic communities, including the emergence of a bimodal size distribution (“dwarfs” and “giants”) in fish populations. Emergence of giants could also be driven or facilitated by parasites that divert host resources from reproduction to growth. We studied the trophic ecology of giant nine-spined sticklebacks (Pungitius pungitius) in a Finnish pond to evaluate the hypotheses that gigantism in this population would be facilitated by cannibalism and/or parasitic infections by Schistocephalus pungitii cestode. Stomach content analyses revealed an initial ontogenetic dietary shift f…

Effects of predation pressure and resource use on morphological divergence in omnivorous prey fish

2013

Background. Body shape is one of the most variable traits of organisms and responds to a broad array of local selective forces. In freshwater fish, divergent body shapes within single species have been repeatedly observed along the littoral-pelagic axes of lakes, where the structural complexity of near shore habitats provides a more diverse set of resources compared to the open-water zones. It remains poorly understood whether similar resource-driven polymorphism occurs among lakes that vary in structural complexity and predation pressure, and whether this variation is heritable. Here, we analyzed body shape in four populations of omnivorous roach (Rutilus rutilus) inhabiting shallow lakes.…

Food-web structure and mercury dynamics in a large subarctic lake following multiple species introductions

2016

Summary The rate of non-native fish introductions into freshwater ecosystems has more than doubled during the past three decades, posing a serious threat to native biodiversity. Despite potential benefits for fisheries, little is known about how introduced species interact with native communities at the food-web level, or impact energy transfer dynamics and accumulation of contaminants in lake ecosystems. Here, we explored the trophic structure of a large, oligotrophic subarctic lake and assessed the trophic niche use and potential ecosystem-wide consequences of two introduced salmonid species: piscivorous lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) and zooplanktivorous vendace (Coregonus albula). We…

Erfolgreiche Supervision in der Psychotherapieausbildung

2019

Social interaction in management group meetings: a case study of Finnish hospital.

2016

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of management group meetings (MGMs) in hospital organization by examining the social interaction in these meetings. Design/methodology/approach – This case study approaches social interaction from a structuration point of view. Social network analysis and qualitative content analysis are applied. Findings – The findings show that MGMs are mainly forums for information sharing. Meetings are not held for problem solving or decision making, and operational coordinating is limited. Meeting interaction is very much focused on the chair, and most of the discussion takes place between the chair and one other member, not between members…

This article is the result of a piece of research based on analysing the content of “Las P…

Automated Content Analysis of Destination Image: a Case Study

2020

Automated content analysis has become one of the most used approaches to extract “hidden” dimensions from text corpora over the last years. One of the data analysis techniques belonging to this approach is topic modeling, which can be fruitfully used to analyse complex phenomena like tourist destination image. With this aim in mind, this paper discusses the use of topic modeling to identify the main components of the image of cruise holidays spread through a specific type of visual text, i.e. the Television commercial. In order to achieve this goal, the paper presents the methodology and main results of a study carried out over a sample of TV commercials, which have recently been broadcast …

Corruption in international business: A review and research agenda

2020

Abstract We systematically reviewed the literature on corruption in international business (137 articles) for the last 17 years between 1992 and 2019. Additionally, we identified seven research streams in this growing literature: (1) the legislation against corruption, (2) the determinants of corruption, (3) combating corruption, 4) the effect of corruption on firms, (5) the political environment and corruption, (6) corruption as a challenge to existing theories of management, and (7) the effect of corruption on foreign direct investment and trade. Based on this review, we recommend that strong international laws are needed to minimize the negative impact of corruption on international busi…

Pulse rate variability measurement with camera-based photoplethysmography

2021

Electrocardiogram (ECG) has been used by doctors and biomedical researchers to measure cardiac parameters such as Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HR is a medical index for health monitoring and the HRV is a sign to reflect the activities of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) and can be used for emotion recognition applications. Recently, remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has evolved as a non-contact technique for measuring vital cardiac signs. Compared with ECG, this technique is non-invasive, low-cost, comfortable and possibly utilized in long-term monitoring. It has great potential in remote health assessment and emotion detection. However, the rPPG is a video-based method,…

LGBTQI+ icons between resistance and normalization: looking for mediatization of emotions in hashtags

2020

The mediatization of emotions emerges as an affordance of social media, the study of which involves paying attention to digital practices and to the construction and expression of public affection. This happens both for the great events and for the daily demonstrations of support or its denial. In this article we work on the phenomenon of the mediatization of emotions linked to two LGBTQI+ icons and expressed in hashtags on Twitter. Placing it in a specific context – the one of well-known television characters who have declared their homosexual orientation or transgender identity. The objective is to understand if the cloud of feelings they have created on Twitter is to be attributed to a t…
